Breaking News - Vodafone secure ten market iPhone deal for later in 2008

Vodafone have issued a short press release confirming that they will be selling the iPhone in ten markets later on this year. These will include Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey. Previous sources had tipped the Indian deal, but this is a significant step for the carrier overall.
Prior to the launch of the iPhone in Europe, Vodafone was heavily tipped to be a key player. It was a surprise, then, when O2, Orange and T-Mobile ended negotiations with the all-important UK, French and German distribution deals. Vodafone later took T-Mobile Germany to the courts claiming their exclusive deal was “anticompetitive“.
While nothing is confirmed, the fact that the list Vodafone have released contains no markets in which the iPhone is presently sold suggests that either negotiations there are still ongoing or, perhaps more likely, that the existing carriers have been given - and taken - first refusal on the 3G iPhone.

No word if iPhone developers who submitted under earlier firmware will be able to re-submit outside the 72 hour period that Apple allots for "re-dos".
Readers report that this is a smaller download (just over 1 GB) and details are trickling in through the comments.

Upcoming Iphone 2.0 software includes Chinese Handwriting recognition

The latest private beta build of Apple's upcoming iPhone 2.0 software apparently includes a handwriting recognition interface for the Chinese language. According to a source close to the story, build 5A258F of the forthcoming software update adds several new Chinese input methods under the international keyboard settings, including handwriting recognition.
"Unfortunately, handwriting recognition is only avaliable in Chinese (Traditional and Simplified) and doesn't support English," the source told AppleInsider.
Apparently as the user draws symbols on the screen, the iPhone's handwriting recognition interface begins to suggest possible character matches in a column to the right of the input area which can then be chosen from and used.
Apple had previously posted a job listing for a handwriting recognition engineer, which may coincide with this emergence of the possible new feature.

The Iphone

" iPhone is a revolutionary new mobile phone that allows you to make a call by simply tapping a name or number in your address book, a favorites list, or a call log. It also automatically syncs all your contacts from a Windows PC, Mac, or Internet service. And it lets you select and listen to voicemail messages in whatever order you want — just like email. iPhone is available in an 8GB model for $399 and a new 16GB model for $499. " This is the apple description about the iphone but in my opinion the iphone is much more than that, for example you can resize a foto by sliding your index finger and your thumb, if you turn the phone from the vertical position the a horizontal one, the iphone automatically changes the display from portrait to landscape, and so on you have to own one to really enjoy it. Watch the videos i'm posting from you tube to see it working.
